The Reds cut veteran Jacque Jones today, leaving only one left-handed hitter off the bench in Lance Nix. Nix is now batting .250 this spring, which makes him look like Roy Hobbs compared to Jones’s .089 average. Per John Fay of the Enquirer, Nix has hit just .132 in the majors over parts of the last three seasons.
One name to consider if the Reds part ways with Nix before breaking camp is Luis Gonzalez. The hero of the 2001 World Series is a guy that is respected around baseball and could be called upon to deliver a clutch at-bat when needed. He just seems like someone that would be a good piece to fit in the organization. The Reds need to get to back to a fun clubhouse in the post-Griffey and Dunn era…and this would help.
He still has not signed, so money is probably a concern. But as we get closer to Opening Day, don’t be surprsied if the Reds try to find another left-handed hitter for their bench…so they don’t have to rely on Lance Nix.
