Opening Day is on Monday, and that means George Grande and the Creeper, Chris Welsh, are back for another season on FSN Ohio.
Grande, who anchored the first ever Sportscenter in 1979 (like a 24-hour sports channel will ever fly), is known for being always upbeat about our Redlegs. Over the years, he is so unintentionally funny at times it makes those meaningless games in August and September somewhat watchable.
Here’s my running list of my favorite Grande-isms. Please forward along your favorites in the comments:
- “The Reds are on the smiling side of the scoreboard tonight!”
- “Hi, hello, and welcome”
- Always speaks very fast when introducing Chris Welsh…”I’m George Grande, along with the craftylefthanderChrisWelsh…”
- Nicknames for every player…Richie, Brucie, etc
- Grande’s fantastic laugh when laughing at his own jokes.
- Juan Castro will forever be known as “Manos de Oro…Golden Hands”
- Refuses to say ‘damn’ when teasing The Best Damn Sports Show Period
- Says the lottery numbers twice in a row…”Pick 3 is 3-2-4, 3-2-4…Pick 4 is 4-5-6-2, 4-5-6-2
- Back when Leann Tweeden was on Best Damn Sports Show…she used to fly across the screen and Grande used to say “Watch out Leeann!”
- During home run calls for the Reds…”It’s gonna beeeeeeeeeee…gone!”
- Also during home runs, Grande will say “Guess what?”
- During a double play call..”6-4-3, yes-siree!”
- Unlike the late, great, Joe Nuxhall, who would go minutes without commentary…Grande is constantly talking from first pitch to last pitch.
