The ridiculousness of Darnell McDonald being on a major league roster is over. McDonald has been designated for assignment, where he can either accept a minor league post or be released outright to free agency.
The Reds made a host of roster moves today, including putting RHP Edinson Volquez on the 15-day DL, retroactive to Sunday, May 17th. Carlos Fisher and Homer Bailey (who starts Saturday) were also called up, along with Jonny Gomes, the last guy cut before the team broke camp in Sarasota. Gomes has brought his average up from the .230’s to .282, and leads Louisville in home runs (9) and RBI’s (27).
And despite the fact that Gomes might be seen as a ‘one-trick pony’…just a guy with power who can’t hit for average or play above-average defense…it’s better than being a no-trick pony, which McDonald achieved quite nicely with a .175 average and one RBI in 40 at-bats.
After dropping their second series in a row, the Reds host Cleveland for a three-game set this weekend.
