After Francisco Cordero blew his first save of the season following a 2+ hour rain delay, the Reds again found themselves in familiar territory: extra innings. Nick Masset was brilliant in the 10th and 11th, then the Reds went to work in the 12th.
A Jay Bruce walk and an error on an Alex Gonzalez sacrifice left Bruce on 3rd, Gonzalez on 1st, and no one out. Ryan Hanigan rolled into a horrible double play, where Gonzalez was cut down and Bruce was unable to advance. You could just picture Adam Dunn coming up in the 12th and humiliating the Reds with a long home run…but then Jonny Gomes lined a double into the corner, and Jerry Hairston brought him home with a single.
Stormy Weathers notched his first save, and the Reds now just sit 1.5 games out of first place. Aaron Harang’s outing went for naught after pitching 7+ innings of shutout baseball.
