Pitching for Sale!

Cincinnati Reds vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

It must be early August because the annual Reds fire-sale has potentially just begun.  Aaron Harang and Bronson Arroyo were recently exposed to the waiver wire and cleared paving the way for the Reds to move one or both of them.  Both are scheduled to make over $10 million next season and we all know that management would love to spend that money elsewhere.  I say move Harang as quickly as possible if a deal makes sense on any level.  For a guy who supposedly has “great stuff” he has gone 12-30 over the last 2 years, even though the team has struggled you would expect more wins from your number one pitcher.  As for Arroyo, his statisitcs aren’t as good as Harang’s, but Mr. Bojangles has posted 13 more wins than Harang over the past 2 seasons.  So I’m hoping Bronson stays around for at least another year or two.

Don’t get me wrong, I actually like Aaron Harang, he can be as dominating as anyone on the Red’s staff, but we pay pitchers to win games.  Some pitchers win consistently no matter what team they play for, Harang is not one of those players.   Put him on a team with a better supporting cast and he wins 20 in a heart beat.  Arroyo on the other hand just wins games, for the money he is my guy.  I am looking forward to tonight’s game to see if Justin Lehr can duplicate the success he enjoyed in his last outing against the Cubs.  Who knows, maybe a 32 year old journeyman reliever has found a home in Cincinnati, that is until next summer when the fire-sale begins anew.  Until next time, be well.
